Hands up who loves online shopping! I’d imagine most of us would have our hands up for this one.
Hands up who loves paying for shipping! I can hear the crickets and tumbleweed rolling past already.
In 2016-17, Australian shoppers spent $22.23 billion on online retailers according to research from shipping software platform, Temando.
According to Temando, about 65 per cent of consumers abandoned their cart due to high shipping costs, and 68 per cent of consumers would shop more online if they were offered free shipping.
But, realistically for online retailers – shipping isn’t cheap. The shipping costs must be recovered somehow – and statistics suggest that setting a minimum spend for free shipping could be a potential solution; however apparently, only 26 to 39 per cent of retailers use this strategy. Up to 65 per cent of consumers said they were willing to increase their spend to qualify for free shipping.
Additionally, only a fifth of retailers offer free shipping on returns – but 45 per cent of consumers said they would shop more online if offered free returns (or drop off at physical stores).
