Social media can be a great avenue for your business to gain organic views and traffic, as customers can easily spread the word about your business and your products.
Most businesses use marketing strategies that includes promotional offers and competitions to encourage social media interaction – however, did you know that businesses that offer incentives for positive reviews of their product may be breaching the Australian Consumer Law (ACL)?
According to the ACCC, such incentives could facilitate a misleading and deceptive overall image of a brand or business, which contravenes the ACL.
Businesses can only run these sorts of competitions if:
- The incentive will be offered equally to those with negative reviews, as well as positive; and
- If this is expressly told to the reviewer.
The offer of an incentive must also be obvious to potential consumers and customers – it must be clearly visible on your social media site or website where the reviews are posted.
